[Power] The first domestic virtual power plant management center was established; communication aggregation is the core.

Recently, Shenzhen Virtual Power Plant Management Center was established. The center has access to 14 load aggregators of distributed energy storage, data centers, charging stations, metro, and other types, with an access capacity of 870,000 kilowatts, close to the installed capacity of a large coal power plant. The management platform adopts the communication technology of “Internet + 5G + intelligent gateway”, which can meet the technical requirements of real-time regulation instructions and online real-time monitoring of the aggregator platform. It can also provide a solid technical guarantee for the participation of user-side adjustable resources in market transactions and load-side response to achieve peak shaving and valley filling in the power grid.

Key Point: China’s virtual power plants are generally at the pilot demonstration stage. A unified virtual power plant platform needs to be established at the provincial level. The main technologies of virtual power plants include metering technology, communication technology, intelligent scheduling and decision-making technology, and information security protection technology. Among them, communication technology is the key to realizing distributed energy aggregation.

[Robot] Tesla and Xiaomi join in the game; Humanoid robots drive the blue ocean market in the upstream industry chain.

Domestic humanoid bionic robots were unveiled at the 2022 World Robot Conference, becoming the most eye-catching robot type. At present, China produces about 100 humanoid robots. In the capital market, industry chain-related companies have been investigated by 473 institutions since July. Demand for servo motors, reducers, controllers, and other core parts of humanoid robots has increased. Since humanoid ones have more joints, the demand for motors and reducers is ten times more than that of industrial robots. Meanwhile, humanoid robots need to function through the master control chip, each requiring to carry 30-40 MCUs.

Key Point: Data show that China’s robotics market will reach RMB120 billion in 2022, with a five-year average annual growth rate of 22%, while the global robotics market will exceed RMB350 billion this year. It is widely believed that the entry of technology giants may force rapid technological progress.

[New Energy] The world’s first “carbon dioxide + flywheel” energy storage project is in trial operation.

The world’s first “carbon dioxide + flywheel” energy storage demonstration project was commissioned on August 25. The project is located in Deyang, Sichuan Province, jointly built by Dongfang Turbine Co. and other companies. The project uses 250,000 m³ of carbon dioxide as the circulating work fluid for charging and discharging, able to store 20,000 kWh in 2 hours with a millisecond response rate. The Deyang project combines the characteristics of long-duration and large-scale carbon dioxide energy storage and fast response of flywheel energy storage, effectively smoothing out grid volatility, solving intermittency problems, and achieving safe grid operation.

Key Point: Currently, global flywheel energy storage accounts for only 0.22% of the installed energy storage, with much room for future development. The market for flywheel energy storage systems is expected to reach RMB 20.4 billion. Among A shares, Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing, Hua Yang Group New Energy, Sinomach Heavy Equipment Group, and JSTI GROUP have made layouts.

[Carbon Neutrality] China’s first megaton CCUS project goes into operation.

On August 25, the largest CCUS (carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage) demonstration base in China built by Sinopec and the first megaton CCUS project (Qilu Petrochemical – Shengli Oilfield CCUS Demonstration Project) were put into operation in Zibo, Shandong Province. The project has two parts: carbon dioxide capture by Qilu Petrochemical and utilization and storage by Shengli Oilfield. Qilu Petrochemical captures carbon dioxide from the industrial exhaust and injects it into the underground oil layer of Shengli Oilfield to separate the crude oil. The crude oil will be stored on site to achieve a win-win situation of carbon reduction and oil increase.

Key Point: The commissioning of the Qilu Petrochemicals – Shengli Oilfield CCUS project created a large-scale demonstration model of CCUS industry chain, in which the refinery emissions and oilfield storage match. It marks the entry of China’s CCUS industry into the middle and latter stages of technology demonstration, the mature commercial operation stage.

[New Infrastructure] The construction of wind and PV base projects speeds up to reach two 50% goals by 2025.

According to data from the National Energy Administration, the first batch of base projects with an installed capacity of 100 million kilowatts have fully started construction. The second batch of wind and PV base projects have been launched, with over RMB 1.6 trillion of direct investment, and the third batch is under organization and planning. By 2025, renewable energy consumption will reach 1 billion tons of standard coal, accounting for more than 50% of the incremental primary energy consumption. Meanwhile, renewable energy generation will account for more than 50% of the incremental electricity consumption of society as a whole, with wind and solar power generation doubling the level at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan.

Key Point: The construction of 10-million-kilowatt offshore wind power bases is planned in five regions, including the Shandong Peninsula, the Yangtze River Delta, southern Fujian, eastern Guangdong, and the Beibu Gulf. It is expected that by 2025, the five bases will add more than 20 million kilowatts of grid-connected offshore wind power. The new construction scale will exceed 40 million kilowatts.

[Semiconductor] Silicon photonics has a promising future; The domestic industry is active.

The chip size is facing physical limits as the ultra-large-scale integrated circuit process welcomes continuous breakthroughs. Silicon photonic chip, as a product of photoelectric fusion, has both photonic and electronic advantages. It uses the CMOS microelectronics process based on silicon materials to achieve the integrated preparation of photonic devices, with super-large logic, high precision, high speed rate, low power consumption and other advantages. The chip is mainly used in communications and will be used in biosensors, laser radar and other fields. The global market is expected to reach $40 billion in 2026. Enterprises like Luxtera, Kotura, and Intel now lead in technology, while China focuses only on design, with a localization rate of only 3%.

Key Point: Photoelectric integration is the future development trend of the industry. China has made silicon photonic chips the key sector in the fourteenth Five-Year Plan. Shanghai, Hubei Province, Chongqing, and Suzhou City have issued relevant support policies, and the silicon photonic chip industry will usher in a round of growth.
