Maersk adjusts sailing plans for loads of international logistics vessels

Maersk Line, a subsidiary of the Maersk Group, is the world’s largest international logistics container carrier with a worldwide service network. As the Russia-Ukraine conflict is escalating, the shipping industry has been affected. Recently, Maersk announced on its official website that the Russia-Ukraine conflict had affected the international logistics transportation of export cargo from Asia. The company will make further adjustments to its business.

According to Maersk, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the impact of sanctions imposed on Russia by some countries have resulted in a series of chain reactions in the global supply chain, which further increases the uncertainty of the international logistics shipping network and leads to serious ship delays.

According to Maersk’s analysis of the current situation, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has directly resulted in the strict inspection of all Russian import and export cargo transiting through terminals and ports in various countries by European customs due to the direct or indirect sanctions imposed on Russia by some European countries. There is even a wider range of indirect effects, such as delays in the international logistics of all the goods involved, congestion in transshipment centers, and even the stability of the global supply chain.

Effects are not limited to trade between Russia and other countries but are global, a concern expressed by Maersk sources. The current restrictions and strict inspections at the relevant transshipment hubs have impacted the transport of export cargo from Asia. To improve the on-time delivery rate, Maersk has started to take countermeasures by adjusting the sailing schedule of the AE6 international logistics Asia-Europe route.

In addition, Maersk is also working with various European ports to clear the backlog of cargo as soon as possible. In the future, Maersk will also be prepared to use alternative routes and redistribute cargo to other route networks to minimize the impact on and loss of customers.

Maersk’s international logistics operations involving Ukraine and Russia have been largely suspended. In the case of cargo already loaded or discharged in Russian and Ukrainian ports, Maersk said its main task is to ensure no additional congestion in ports and warehouses worldwide. Therefore, it will make every effort to deliver international logistics cargo in transit and booked before the suspension announcement to its destination.

Moreover, Maersk has stated that cargo already destined for Russia and Ukraine and cargo that cannot be delivered due to various restrictions will not be subject to the relevant storage charges. At the same time, a change of destination service will be provided free of charge. International logistics sea freight and other related fees will be waived as well. At the same time, to ease congestion in the European supply chain, cancellation involving Ukraine and Russia will be free for international logistics sea freight until March 11. Demurrage charges incurred at temporary ports of call will be waived for Ukrainian imports and exports and Russian exports as well. However, due to various controls and inspections, there may be long-time delays in the international logistics of the goods mentioned above.
